According to the RUFS 2010, âevery green wedge should be held together and its functions and qualities should be retained and improvedâ.5 The plan stated that a green wedge should be at least 500 metres wide, as this would provide visitors with a sense of seclusion in nature, as well as the possibility of experiencing varied landscapes. Besides, this is considered to support the proliferation of different edge and interior ecological habitats.6
While biodiversity was the main theme during the 1990s, the subsequent plans for the green and blue infrastructure of Stockholm included a wider range of functions. Stockholm County Council identified the green wedgesâ main functions (Figure 6.2) mostly around recreation and biodiversity. Other functions such environmental management and mitigation of the impacts of climate change are becoming more prominent.7 The regionâs green wedges are the setting for many recreational activities, both active, such as hiking, cycling or sports practised at open-air recreational centres, and passive, focused more on the contact with the natural environment in its variety of landscapes, from wilder to more urban. In ecological and environmental terms, these wedges are home to important forested areas acting as significant ecological corridors, as is the case of the Järva and the Tyreste wedges. Stockholm region presents high levels of ecological connectivity, mostly due to the continuity of green wedges extending from the countryside and forested areas into the city core. This allows almost every inhabitant of the region close access to large green spaces. Moreover, some species are still found in the inner area of Stockholm which otherwise would not be there.8
